102722 Excuses

One thing that’s guaranteed at Harvest is that the hour will be challenging. Today we snatched and the majority of the session was only with the barbell. Even that was tough. Hell! It’s even tough when we do a stretching session! And I think because of that, a lot of people need to get themselves emotionally amped up even to come into the gym. After months or years of training 5 days a week, that can first of all, become draining, and second, we’ve done enough sessions to kind of tell how things are going to go based on how we’re “feeling” or what’s going on in our lives before we even step foot in the gym.

It’s really good to be that in-tune with our bodies, but it can also be discouraging when we defeat ourselves before we’ve even started.

“I’m busy at work, so this isn’t going to go well”

“I drank too much this weekend, this is going to suck”

“My kid is getting an F in English, I don’t want to think about working out”

“My shoulder is dinged up, I’m not going to smash this one”

Those are all true. Also True, is that you have a job and a family, life to live beyond your fitness goals, and it’s likely that there will always be some condition that prevents you from having an optimal training session. You’ll never ever have a training session where there isn’t something that could be used as an excuse.

Bummer! Even though, there will always be something holding us back from optimal performances, you can choose to give your best effort in spite of those “could-be excuses”. Re-worded: your season of life has power over your performance, your season of life does not have to have power over your attitude and effort!
