Humans like to be in controll. Some more than others, but in general, we like the idea that we direct our outcomes. Is it true? Do you get to decide what happens? Tell that to a kid with Lukemia, right? We just don’t get to decide what ultimately happens... ever. We probably buy into this idea that we are in controll because a lot of the time, it seems like we are. You go to work and work hard and you get paid. Did you pay yourself? Well actually someone else pays you because of your work. It could just as well happen that you won’t get paid, and we try to apply this idea to a lot of stuff that is truly out of our controll.
I’m working out and eating a certain amount, so I deserve to weigh a certain amount or look a certain way or have a certain wod score. If that were the truth- If you had true controll over your xyz about your health, you’d have already made it.
What can and can’t you controll? Well simply put, you can’t controll literally ANY outcome, but you can controll literally EVERY habit and action. One of the main reasons I love Greg Glassman’s “World Class Fitness in 100 Words” is it’s all actionable. Fitness is action not a destination or body type or look. Nowhere does it say weigh x amount or have this many abs showing.
All you can do is your best and even if you can’t do your best, you can do just a little better than last time. Let’s just see how the chips fall. Maybe I’m weird and think the healthiest and most attractive version of a person is the best genetic version of themselves. If you disagree. Like if you think that you’ll look manly if your muscles show or you think you won’t run as well if your deadlift is really big, I guess my only response is, “prove it”. Like do these habits and become really fit and then tell me you’re unhappy with your health and fitness.
There’s a lot of freedom in giving up the controll of outcomes. And actually by giving up controll of the outcomes, you get to really focus on controlling what you actually can, your habits and actions. Which would you rather experience? Doing everything “right” yet disappointed by the outcomes that you really never had any controll over whatsoever? You could be experiencing win after win after win by celebrating every time you do something you can controll.
